Sour Taste, Sweet Uses

Image

When life gives you lemons, clean your microwave!  Lemons are a versatile fruit as there are dozens, yes dozens, of uses for them.  Food residue inside of your microwave is no match for lemon juice and water.  Simply mix 3 tablespoons of lemon juice with a 1 cup of water and heat the mixture, uncovered, in the microwave for 5-10 minutes.  The steam emitted will loosen the unwanted debris, making it easy to wipe away the food splatters.  Lemons can also be used to polish chrome, clean tarnished brass or deodorize a humidifier.  As the summer wears on, be sure to grab a few extra lemons for around the house.  Lemons are a safe option for a variety of cleaning and general household jobs.

Denver Broncos Leading the Way

Image

The Denver Broncos are certainly on the forefront of recent sporting news as they have acquired pro-bowl quarterback Payton Manning in the offseason.  Although the football world will be watching their upcoming season, the Denver Broncos are making a lasting impression off the field.  Colorado, and the rest of the world, was stunned last week with the shootings in Aurora Colorado.  12 people were killed and many more injured.  How did the organization respond?  Players began making phone calls and setting up visits with the victims and their families.  Coach John Fox had this to say when asked about the tragedy: “Well, we’re going to do our absolute best and we understand the responsibility that comes with being in the Broncos organization,” Fox said. “This region, city, state has great passion for the team, there’s no doubt. I think our players will feel that responsibility and it’s something that we’ll talk about most definitely later today in our team meeting.”  It is great to know that this organization is stepping up to help their community both on and off the gridiron.

How to Save Money in Oil Country

Image

The Bakken is booming and perhaps your wages are too, but there are still many ways to save money.  Wouldn’t it be nice to have an extra $1,000-$2,000 dollars every month?  Here are some simple ways to save cash every month:

  • Bring your own lunch to work.  Most people do not realize that when you pack/make your own lunch, you are saving huge bucks!  For example, if you spend $7.00 on lunch each work day (20 days) then you are spending an extra $140 dollars each month.
  • Buy your soda/water in bulk.  When you spend $1.50-$2.00 dollars a day on a pop or water you could be overspending by up to 50%.  This alone could save you $25 dollars.
  • If you can walk, then do so!  Gas prices in the Bakken area are inflated because of the boom and you could be spending an extra $.25 a gallon.  That amount can add up over time!
  • Cook your dinner after work.  Trust me, I know this is tough, especially after a long day at work, but preparing your own meal could save you over $300 dollars!  A typical dinner at a restaurant, after the tip, is going to average around $20.  Save that cash for a rainy day and cut back by a night or two.
  • Turn your lights off, shorten your shower time and only run the A/C when it is really hot.  This is a no-brainer as these utilities can weigh heavily on your monthly expenses.

The main thing to remember is not to be too frugal.  Go have some fun every once in a while, but save when you can so there is money around when you really need it.

Inside Out

Image

We are asked by many customers how they can hold resale value in their car.  The engine, tires and other exterior features are very important and are often given the most attention by their owners but as vehicle specialists, we cannot emphasize interior cleanliness enough.  When we are evaluating a car for trade-in or pricing, the interior condition of the car plays a large role in the total value of the vehicle.  There are many steps you can take to preserve the interior of your car without spending hundreds of dollars on a detailer.

  • Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum.  Vacuuming your whole car including the floor mats, cargo area, back seats, under the seats and beneath each floor mat is extremely important.  These areas can accumulate dirt and dust which, in turn, can lead to bad odors and permanent damage.
  • Use an all-purpose cleaner to wipe off dirt and dust from hard surfaces.  No one likes to see built up debris in the car.
  • Clean all leather with the appropriate cleaners.  Use a cotton swap to remove the extra cleaner from cracks or seams.
  • Wipe down the inside of all windows with glass cleaner.  Streaks can be reduced if the glass cleaner is sprayed directly onto the rag.

Year of the Tiger

Image

Is he back for good?  Tiger Woods has been in the spotlight since he entered the PGA in 1996.  Whether it was becoming the youngest golfer to ever win the Masters, the signing of a massive contract with Nike or his involvement in a marital scandal, Tiger Woods has been on the forefront of all sporting news.  His knee surgery in 2008 along with his deteriorating marriage in 2009 brought bad times for the golfing star and it appeared that the “Woods Era” was on its last leg.  His poor play in recent years brought many sports analysts to believe that Tiger Woods was finally washed-up, especially because young stars like Rory McILroy and Rickie Fowler were rising through the ranks.  The golf world has been rocked this year by the re-vamped Tiger as he has 3 PGA Tour wins under his belt and has been in contention several other times.  Perhaps this is the year golf fans have been waiting for; the year that Tiger reclaims his title as the best golfer in the world.  He is the money leader for this year and is ranked 1st by the FedEx Cup and 4th by World Golf Ranking.
